Ilias Lalaounis (1920–2013) was a Greek jeweller whose work redefined the role of jewellery as wearable art. After training in painting and sculpture, Lalaounis turned to jewellery in the 1950s, founding his eponymous house in Athens in 1957. He drew deep inspiration from the ancient art and archaeology of the Mediterranean — particularly Greek, Etruscan, Byzantine, and Egyptian sources — which he translated into bold, expressive modern designs.

Unlike traditional jewellery houses focused solely on stones and glamour, Lalaounis elevated form, theme, and cultural narrative to the heart of every piece, often treating gold itself as a principal material of artistic expression rather than simply a setting for gems.

Over decades, his work attracted international collectors and museums alike. His pieces are held in permanent collections at institutions such as the Louvre (Paris), the Victoria & Albert Museum (London), the Benaki Museum (Athens) and the Smithsonian (Washington D.C.) — a testament to the artistic, cultural and historical relevance of his jewellery.
